Understanding Microwave-Safe Disposable Food Containers
Share
Many food delivery businesses prefer using disposable plastic containers to package meals. However, not all disposable plastic containers are microwave-safe.
Most plastic containers feature a triangular symbol with a number inside. Some people mistakenly believe these numbers indicate how many times the container can be reused: "1" means it can be used once, "2" means it can be used twice, and so on.
In reality, these numbers represent the type of plastic material used. Different materials have different properties and limitations. Some plastics are not heat-resistant, while others are difficult to clean.
The only plastic material that is microwave-safe is polypropylene (PP), identified by the number "5" inside the triangular symbol, as shown below. Therefore, before microwaving your takeaway food, check if the plastic container has "PP" or the number "5" on it.
If the disposable container does not have the appropriate symbol, it’s best to transfer the food to a microwave-safe container before heating.
Even if the takeaway container is labeled as microwave-safe, it is not recommended to reuse it after heating. Microwave heating, combined with the food's oils and fats, can cause harmful substances to leach out from the packaging. Moreover, disposable containers are typically thin and brittle, making them unsuitable for repeated use.
Besides plastic disposable containers, many restaurants also opt for paper-based disposable tableware to package food. Generally, matte-finished paper containers without a plastic coating are microwave-safe. These containers are made from materials like bagasse and straw, and their primary advantage is higher safety. They are produced using techniques similar to paper manufacturing. High-quality products of this type can be microwaved safely. However, paper containers with a plastic coating should be avoided in the microwave.
Common examples of such paper containers include paper cups, instant noodle cups, and kraft paper food containers. These containers often have an internal coating made from PE (polyethylene) or more eco-friendly PLA (polylactic acid), which are not heat-resistant and should not be microwaved.
